NACIENTES PALMICHAL TOUR - One day tours Nacientes Palmichal

Once we get to the ¨biodigestor¨, you will learn about the process of producing bio gas and biofertilizer through pig excrement. Afterwards, you will head up to Nacientes Palmichal where you will have a snack at the lodge, walk through the natural reserve, eat a traditional Costa Rican lunch, and learn about the history of Nacientes. The lecture over the history of Nacientes will also include information about its future goals. We will then go down to Palmichal for a tour of the Beneficio and learn about its coffee production and its organic fertilizer production from coffee peal and ¨lombricultura¨.

Before we leave Palmichal, we will meet up with a group of women skilled in arts and crafts at the Corralar Church. We will then take part in numerous activities such as ornamental plant production and making bread and bags. Afterwards we will all have coffee and head back to San Jose.


NACIENTES PALMICHAL TOUR - Birthplace of life-giving water

• Leaving from Tabarcia
• Visit to the farm “El Arroyito” where our local guide welcomes us and gives a short introduction of the place. There you can observe little streams and natural springs.
• Arrival at the finca “Valle de Aguas” (valley of water), where we will offer you a snack before leaving for a walk to a waterfall. Afterwards we will visit springs that have recovered thanks to natural regeneration and the planting of trees.
• Visit to a sugar-mill that is run with waterpower, production of sugar juice from sugar cane.
• Lunch at the Environmental Centre Nacientes Palmichal.
• Chat about the efforts of the communitarian association concerning the conservation of the basin of the rivers Negro and Tabarcia.
• Walk around the rivers Tabarcia and Negro, observing the extraction of water from the springs.
• handmade coffee at Mrs. Ceci´s kitchen where you can also try some biscuits and “pan casero” – sweet homemade bread.
• Get to know some craftswomen

NACIENTES PALMICHAL TOUR - Butterflies, fruit trees and coffee

• Arrival at Tabarcia at the finca “El Arroyito”
• Our local guide welcomes us and explains briefly about the place. Here you can see all kinds of different fruit trees: lime-trees, tangerine-trees, orange-trees and trees of peachpalm, guava, or wild granadilla among others.
• Snack at the Environmental Centre of Nacientes Palmichal.
• Walk along the “butterfly-path”.
• Lunch at Palmichal
• Chat about the efforts of the communities of Palmichal and Tabarcia to develop sustainable tourism in the basin.
• Walk around the coffee-estate of Mr. Manuel Azofeifa, small producer, where you will get to know an agro-forestal plantation of coffee with beautiful views into the valley. Furthermore the owner will explain you about his experiences in the management and maintenance of the coffee growing as well as about the crafty process of preparing a tasty cup of coffee…
• Homemade coffee in Mrs. Mery Monge’s kitchen; the visitors can make their tortillas and prepare coffee on their own, roasting, grinding and filtering it. (In 2007 this coffee was elected the best cup of excellent coffee in Costa Rica by national and international testers of the organisation ASOPROAAA.).
• You will be introduced to the craftsman and –woman of the family Mora.

NACIENTES PALMICHAL TOUR - Dairy Tour

• Leaving from Tabarcia
• Visit the farm “La Mora”, where you will be told about the buffalos and the use of their milk to produce mozzarella cheese. Furthermore there will be a demonstration of the handling of these strong animals and of their domestication. Cows are milked as well.
• We will meet our local guide who will give us a brief introduction about the small enterprises for dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt). Walk around the facilities, tasting the dairy products.
• Lunch at the Environmental Centre Nacientes Palmichal
• Talk about the efforts of the communities of Palmichal and Tabarcia concerning the sustainable development of the basin.
• Visit to the finca “Paraje de Bendición” where you can watch the production of handmade cheese and taste some of it as well. A working biodigestor, which produces biogas and bio-fertilizer of the excrements of the livestock, can be observed; calves, pigs and chicken can be fed; cows can be milked and fruits of the area can be tasted.
• Enjoy a natural snack, made from local products (tortillas with cheese, fresh fruits and natural juice) and homemade coffee at Mrs. Zaida’s. The visitors can make their tortillas and prepare their own coffee, roasting, grinding and filtering it. (In 2007 this coffee was elected the best cup of excellent coffee in Costa Rica by national and international testers of the organisation ASOPROAAA.).

• Leaving from Tabarcia
• Our local guide welcomes us and explains shortly about biodigestores. Mrs. Gerardina will go on to explain about their way of operating and maintenance as well as about the environmental and economical benefits which arose with their usage. In addition she will demonstrate how biogas can be used in the kitchen.
• Visit a sugar-mill that is run by waterpower. Get to know about the history, the operating and the usage of this century-old mill which has its origins in England and was already used by our ancestors. It is astonishing to see it working with the water, knowing that there exist only two sugar-mills of this kind in Costa Rica.
• Lunch at the Environmental Centre Nacientes Palmichal
• Talk about the efforts of the communities of Palmichal and Tabarcia to develop sustainable local policies and to put their plans of sustainable development into action.
• Walk around the finca “Paraje de Bendición” where you can see a biodigestor working, producing biogas and bio-fertilizer from excrements of the farmer’s livestock. The kids can feed calves, pigs or chicken or try to milk a cow. Regional fruits can be tasted as well.
• Enjoy a natural snack, made from local products (tortillas with cheese, fresh fruits and natural juice) and homemade coffee at Mrs. Zaida´s. The visitors can make their tortillas and prepare their own coffee, roasting, grinding and filtering it. NACIENTES PALMICHAL TOUR - Tour to enterprising families (ASOFE)

• Leave from Tabarcia.
• Arrival at “Los Labriegos”. Our local guide gives you an introduction to organic agriculture and production. Afterwards we will walk around the estate which contains big vegetable gardens and facilities of lombricompost.
• Explanation about the small dairy enterprise (producing and selling milk, cheese and yogurt) and a walk around their facilities. Of course, you can also taste those products.
• Visit a sugar-mill that is run by waterpower. Get to know about the history, the operating and the usage of this century-old mill which has its origins in England and was already used by our ancestors. It is astonishing to see it working with the water, knowing that there exist only two sugar-mills of this kind in Costa Rica.
• Lunch at the farm “El Valle de las Aguas”.
• We start to walk along paths where the consequences of reforestation are eminent and up to 100 species of trees can be discovered. Afterwards we will visit springs that have recovered thanks to natural regeneration and planting of trees.
• Visit the farm “La Mora”; where you will be told about the buffalos and the use of their milk to produce mozzarella cheese. Furthermore there will be a demonstration of the handling of these strong animals and of their domestication. Cows are milked as well.
